PLACE / Ladywell
Lewisham
The housing crisis is the greatest challenge facing London today, and tackling it is one of the Mayor's biggest priorities. The vision is to provide all Londoners with a good quality home they can afford and to address homelessness and rough sleeping in the city.
A temporary housing scheme for 24 homeless families with the delivery of housing to support Lewisham’s housing needs was a key objective. PLACE/Ladywell was the result of a partnership with Lewisham Council, RSHP and AECOM. Adopting an offsite volumetric modular solution, the BREEAM excellent project was delivered to a faster programme, compared to traditional construction, and is now a benchmark for the delivery of modular housing across London.
Community and retail use at ground level enable the community to thrive. With the manufacturing and assembly process inherent in the modular solution, control over quality, finish and programme enabled over 95% of the project to be delivered offsite, and has reduced running costs, in use, by up to 50%. The scheme has been designed to be dismantled and moved to another site in the borough freeing up the land for other uses.
