Cycle Superhighways

London

Cycle Superhighways, developed by Transport for London, have revolutionised cycling in London, encouraging commuters to choose active travel by bike. The scheme, implemented in parallel with the London Cycle Hire Scheme and the Biking Boroughs project, aims to encourage Londoners to choose to travel by bike.

AECOM initially reviewed Transport for London’s initial feasibility design for the East West and North South routes and then undertook preliminary design and detailed design work. The project combined AECOM’s expertise in the design of cycle amenities with corridor-based traffic-improvement plans. Close consultation with stakeholder groups and the project client team ensured the delivery of world class cycling facilities by Summer 2016.

AECOM designed and supervised the implementation of innovative measures to make commuting by bicycle a more attractive option along the routes into central London from outer London. The facilities include wide, cycle-only traffic lanes and dedicated cycle signals.
