North West Cambridge Development

Cambridge

The North West Cambridge development represents the largest expansion in the 800-year history of the University of Cambridge. The vision was to create a sustainable, thriving, urban community to address increasing student and staff numbers, provide new housing and community facilities for Cambridge to enhance the University and surrounding areas.

AECOM provided services including master planning, landscape architecture and engineering. We developed a best practice streetscape concept in consultation with the local authority. The development was designed to create and encourage a healthy and active community by incorporating green space, creating user-friendly streetscapes and efficient wayfinding, providing infrastructure for public transport, and creating an extensive cycle network and walkable neighbourhoods.

Achieving a low-speed environment throughout the development was a primary consideration. Three street types were developed each with a hierarchy of scale and speed and measures were introduced to slow traffic and facilitate an inclusive environment with pedestrian and cyclist priority. The design created a multi-layered landscape integrating sitewide systems for water management, engineering and ecology.
