Sentiment
Welcome to AECOM's Sentiment infrastructure and buildings construction survey
New Zealand continues to progress through an era of growth, and the way we plan and build our cities and regions is an important part of this growth. We believe that an industry-wide conversation about how best to tackle this future development is beneficial and will help to ensure robust and sustainable outcomes.
As a company, we are committed to delivering a better world. With the infrastructure and buildings Sentiment survey in its twelfth year, we are continuing our mission to collect valuable industry insights and to ensure we are well positioned to take on the challenges and opportunities that confront our industry.
2022 report
This year has seen the overall optimism across the country soften, although this has been more pronounced in Auckland than in other regions. While many businesses remain confident that they will see an increase in workloads over the next three years, confidence in the overall industry outlook and the government’s commitment to infrastructure has fallen since the previous survey in 2021.
Skills and material shortages remain the industry's top challenge. High inflation and construction costs are putting pressure on infrastructure budgets along with the current supply chain challenges are also key concerns among respondents, fearing that these issues would continue to impact project deliverables and have the potential to stifle economic gains.
The Sentiment report shines the spotlight on various sectors, including transport, water, sustainability and resilience, and energy along with the challenges these sectors face.
Industry spotlight
Several key themes have emerged from this year's survey, including the need for a better understanding of the pipeline of future projects in order for organisations to build the capacity to deliver critical infrastructure sustainably. Overall optimism in the country has weakened slightly, though it has been more pronounced in Auckland than in other regions.
Construction in the infrastructure and building sectors is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels, but the economic repercussions of COVID-19 are expected to remain for some time to come. While New Zealand has limited ties with Russia and Ukraine, the war in Ukraine has had several indirect effects on the industry in the form of higher energy prices, rising interest rates, and ongoing disruptions in the global supply chain.
Global insights
Articles from AECOM’s regional and global leaders provide unique perspectives on similar challenges faced around the world, and drive conversation around how we can apply learnings to better deliver infrastructure in New Zealand.
