In collaboration with Snow Kreilich, we designed an award-winning baseball facility for the St. Paul Saints, culminating their move from the old Midway Stadium to their new home located in the Lowertown arts district.
The new CHS Field was born out of a partnership between public entities and the team. The partners engaged with local artists, residential and farmers market leaders to collaborate on the development of a complex that enhances the unique culture and community of the Lowertown neighborhood. The stadium complex worked to integrate an adjacent expansion to the regional light rail transit spur, with game-day accommodations that specifically encourage the use of transit alternatives and make them more convenient for the Saints fanbase. Touted as the “greenest ballpark” in America, the design embodies the team’s mantra “fun is good” by featuring local artists, food vendors and even a pet-friendly dog park to embrace all aspects and concerns expressed by neighbors during the planning process.
Keeping with the tradition of the team and its leadership, CHS Field has played host to significantly more community events and cultural activities than traditional baseball games. The new facility has quickly been embraced by Lowertown and in many ways has become an extension of the adjacent town square farmers market, encouraging its accessibility and use for anything and everything Saint Paul can dream up.
The ballpark also includes state-of-the art administrative offices for the club with views of the playing field. A new indoor practice facility — including batting tunnels, locker rooms for players, coaches and all training rooms — was incorporated to ensure best-in-class baseball performance amenities.
