Healthcare designed to a human scale in collaboration with the local community has created an inspiring and award-winning hospital that helps to aid recovery and transform patient outcomes.
In association with Capita Percy Thomas, we were appointed as lead consultant and designers for a new local hospital. Based on the ‘Healing by Design’ concept, the design of the new Downe hospital is not that of a purely clinically functional layout. The hospital setting encourages the positive effects of nature and environment on improving patient care. The £64m new build includes a diagnostic and treatment center, an ambulatory center, an inpatient center, a rehabilitation and resource center, a childrens’ center and maternity unit as well as psychiatric and dementia centers.
The new Downe hospital is located within the scenic grounds of the historic Downshire Hospital in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. The design of the new building is to a human scale with materials being chosen to complement the existing hospital and its setting. The tiered, stepped back form of the building blends with the existing formal landscape and provides natural daylight and ventilation throughout. The finished project provides scenic vistas for patients to support their recovery and won a RIBA award.
