Fralin Biomedical at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)

Roanoke, Virginia, USA

Beginning in 2007, Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic selected us to plan and design their combined new Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine and Research Institute with a goal of increasing the pool of new doctors in the region and advancing the field of medical research. The medical school takes full advantage of its location with community amenities steps away, such as parks and the robust Roanoke River Greenway and Blueway, encouraging a work/play balance for healthy minds and bodies.

To train the next generation of biomedical scientists and advance transformative research, Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic once again looked to us to provide the design excellence required to expand biomedical research capabilities at this campus. For more than 14 years we have continued to collaborate with Virginia Tech and the Carillion Clinic and the campus. In July of 2020, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC opened adjacent to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute. The building is 140,000 square feet and cost $78 million to construct. It focuses on providing advanced biomedical research facilities at the Carillion Campus and is a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certified building.

A team of doctors and scientists got an early start working at the Fralin facility, standing up a coronavirus laboratory in late April 2020 to expand the testing capacity of public health districts across Southwest Virginia and prepare for the return of students and employees to Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus in the fall semester. The lab can process 1,000 tests per day and turn around results in 24 hours, essential in the ongoing effort to protect community health.
