Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital and Physician’s Clinic

Rockford, Illinois, USA

The award-winning Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside in Rockford, Illinois, exemplifies our client’s commitment to understanding its communities to provide improved healthcare outcomes. This hospital and clinic, the region’s only level I pediatric trauma center, is a six-story, 194-bed regional tertiary referral hospital and a state-designated regional perinatal center for an 11-county region in northern Illinois and a four-county region in southern Wisconsin. This hospital provides women’s and children’s medical services, intensive care for all ages, a cardiac center, a 52-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), small baby unit, pediatric unit, maternal-fetal medicine services and birthing center. The adult inpatient services include medical/surgical, intensive care and step-down intensive care units, as well as a host of hybrid technology and outpatient surgery services for both children and adults. The building also features a four-story specialty physician’s clinic.

Designed with abundant light, inviting surroundings and the most advanced technology available, the hospital offers a calming, sustainable atmosphere combined with ease of access to vital services. Throughout the design process, evidence-based standards played a major role in shaping decisions and regular mock drills helped test and refine plans. Our scope of services included architecture, medical planning, interior design, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, and medical equipment planning.

Our design process was grounded in patient and community requirements. Along with Mercyhealth, we identified eight virtual patients along with their family members/caregivers to represent key potential users of the facility. The virtual patients represented a range of age, gender, family support, priorities, physical limitations, healthcare concerns, and job responsibilities. Using focus group data and other research, We summarized each virtual patient’s anticipated expectations and key goals for their experience.
