The human biology building is located on the main National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) campus. The building is the main location for undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching as well as being the location for cutting-edge scientific and medical research by academics from across the campus.
The five story building brings the disciplines of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and therapeutics together under one roof. It incorporates undergraduate medical teaching facilities, including a mortuary and anatomy laboratories, as well as postgraduate research focused on a large vivarium and the central microscopy unit for the University.
The laboratory facilities include Level II containment laboratories and a gross anatomy laboratory with 12 specialist drowndraft tables and associated body fridges.
The design offers a sheltered colonnade along the canal which is a busy connecting route within the campus, linking the principal academic buildings with the student facilities. As part of the overall strategy to optimize the use of renewable energy on the campus the building has a flat roof of ceramic/slate chip finish with an area of glazed photovoltaic panels.
Professor Timothy O’Brien, Dean of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at NUI Galway, said:
‘The Human Biology Building will provide the next generation of scientists, doctors and healthcare professionals with a world class learning environment and will also provide our academics and researchers with state-of-the-art facilities to further the teaching and research mission of the University. The structure of the building is state of the art. It will greatly facilitate enhanced interactions between staff and student and will provide superior technical and operational capabilities that underpin a research and innovation intensive environment.’
