Facing an increasing demand for land resource, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has been exploring different options to increase land supply in Hong Kong. Rock cavern development is considered as one of the new sources of land supply.
With a daily treatment capacity of 340,000 cubic metres, the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) is the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong, capable of serving nearly a million people. The relocation of the STSTW will reduce its footprint by half, and make it Asia’s largest sewage treatment works located in caverns.
AECOM is engaged by Drainage Services Department of the HKSAR to provide a wide and holistic scope of services that includes feasibility study, engineering and environmental impact assessments, design of sewage treatment process, devising a fire-fighting strategy, performing sophisticated geotechnical assessment, as well as all aspects of engineering and architectural design in relation to the sewage treatment works in caverns, and construction supervision and public engagement services. AECOM will deliver advanced sewage- and sludge-treatment technologies to meet the demand for decades to come, minimize the size of needed caverns and optimize the cost of the entire lifecycle. In addition to reducing the environmental impact from the treatment operations, the relocation will free up 28 hectares of land for housing and other beneficial uses.
