Lumen Field was groundbreaking within NFL stadiums for its integration of the building type into a redeveloping urban neighborhood. Ahead of its time in recognizing that the future of professional football revenue would require diverse real estate holdings to drive income outside of gameday, Lumen Field remains the most efficient stadium in the NFL by overall building area, combining the full extent of the original Kingdome capabilities into a complex which responds accordingly to the needs of an evolving south Seattle district. The combination of stadium and attached WAMU Theater/Exhibition Center makes the overall facility adaptable to a range of community and professional sporting event needs.
Knitted into the Occidental Avenue district, the stadium becomes a complementary neighbor for the residential complex comprised of historic loft conversions which form the urban edge directly across the street. Forward looking in its purposeful design for both professional soccer and football, Lumen Field has succeeded in providing a true dual function capability for both the MLS Sounders and NFL Seahawks, recognized as the premiere home field venue in both leagues. Approaching one decade in operation, Lumen Field continues to be a model for successful integration of an NFL venue into a diverse urban live-work-play environment.
