Since 1998, our team has been providing planning and design consultancy services to the core area of the Suzhou Industrial Park – including the master planning for Jinji Lake and surrounding areas. After more than two decades of effort, we have witnessed the transformation of the 550-hectare lakefront area into a focal point not only in Suzhou but also in China.
In recent years, with the continuous development and improvement of the Suzhou Industrial Park, Jinji Lake area has entered a new stage of renewal, activation, and redevelopment. AECOM, as a trusted advisor, continues to work closely with the governing authorities to adapt the urban environment in response to evolving development needs. This includes providing customized planning and design recommendations to promote the construction of a more livable and sustainable urban space in the greater Jinji Lake area in response to increasing population, transportation, changing industries and environmental needs. From the planning of the waterfront landscape slow-transport system in the Suzhou Industrial Park to the recent integrated development plan for the Jinji Lake area and the landscape improvement project for the east bank of Jinji Lake, the partnership between AECOM and Jinji Lake continues to flourish.
The central river on the east bank is a demonstration section for the renewal and transformation of the Jinji Lake area, with the design concept of "Blue and Green line interweave, Civil Life of Yuan Rong". It focuses on strengthening humanistic care, fully enhancing the value of public space assets, and incorporating composite functions to unlock greater potential for lakeside vitality to lead future urban space regeneration and quality placemaking.
Based on site challenges and new goals, the design proposed five strategies: "1) continuous access, 2) composite functions, 3) enhanced city image, 4) boosting vitality, and 5) Ecological and sustainability". This resulted in restructuring the riverfront interface to strengthen a human-oriented place, established a comfortable barrier-free access system; integrated fragmented tertiary riverside spaces, reshaped them into functionally composite two-level riverside spaces; improving greening and places for nature, maximized the balance between the value of riverside commercial interfaces, ecological requirement. Enhance the continuity and water access of public footpaths, create more ecological corridors ,while enhancing spatial flexibility to create multiple possibilities for round-the-clock activities. After the renovation and completion of the central river, the view became more open, walking became more relaxed and comfortable, experiences enabled more contact with nature, water and commercial options became more diverse, and the economic vitality was increased.
Our teams always insist on creating more inclusive and shared humanistic space experiences and firmly believes that it can bring more value to public spaces.
