Over a decade, The Yards has been transformed from an abandoned federally owned industrial “backyard” into a vibrant riverfront neighborhood. Since 2007 our landscape architecture team has worked in partnership with the developer and the District of Columbia to help reshape this area of the Anacostia River into a prototype for better urban living, continually raising the bar for greater ecology and social equity.
The transformative impact of the newly built pedestrian-friendly street network at the Yards embodies the evolving character of the District and overhaul of its urban mobility, where road spaces are reclaimed into shared vital spaces for trees and people. The central tenet of The Yards development is to reclaim urbanity while embracing the Anacostia as a regional asset. This vision has become a reality through the adoption of innovative partnerships that have brought people together.
