University College London East Campus (Marshgate)

London, United Kingdom

A new research and teaching facility at the center of University College London’s (UCL) academic vision for a new campus at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Part of UCL’s largest ever single expansion totaling over £500 million and which opened for the 2023 academic year, Marshgate has been designed to provide new spaces for collaborative thinking that transcend the boundaries of traditional academic activities, enabling students and staff to immerse themselves in innovative activities and game-changing approaches to research.

It provides over 35,000 square meters of academic space and house research and teaching for several departments. It has brought together cross-disciplinary expertise from academic activities, which include culture, experimental engineering, manufacturing futures, advanced propulsion laboratories, and wet and dry laboratories, learning hub, cafes and refectory, teaching, lecture theatres and seminar and office space.

Marshgate will be home to new degree programs, research, innovation and technologies from across eight UCL faculties, uniting activities across Experiments, Arts, Society & Technology (EAST), as well as a range of academic centers, including: Institute of Making, Advanced Propulsion Lab, Manufacturing Futures Lab, Experiential Learning and Research Hub, Global Business School for Health, Institute of Finance and Technology, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Culture Lab.

Externally, the new public realm provides a sense of cohesion for the campus between Marshgate, and the surrounding development. The development achieves a balance between community, public spaces and private learning spaces. The ground floor is a fluid zone that welcomes the public and the wider community. The design evolved and reacted to the changing needs in education and socialization following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The environment supports students’ and teachers’ academic and social needs and is centred around flexible working, teaching, and studying styles.

Our role on the Marshgate and adjacent Pool Street West development follows ten years of continuously supporting the University College London to expand and grow its educational facilities across the city.
