Rhondda Cynon Taf Post-flood Event Support

Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, UK

Working closely with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council we are assessing the impacts from major flood events, including those caused by storm Callum in 2018 and by the more recent flood events in 2020, and formulating a recovery plan to assist them on their path to recovery.

Rhondda Cynon Taf has been significantly impacted by storm events from 2018 to 2020 causing widespread flooding and damage to flood defences, roads and other council infrastructure. The council specifically needed support to collate and analyse flood impact data to assess the sources and pathways of the flooding, the damage to flood risk and highway infrastructure, and to scope the options and costs for potential solutions.

Phase one of our work involves collating and assessing incoming flood impact data to create a longlist of high-priority cases and identifying preferred solutions for repairs. Phase two involves the development of a prioritised long-term programme of repair work and further flood investigation for the council to progress, which includes designing improvements to culverts, drains, highways and using sustainable drainage and natural flood management techniques to facilitate the recovery process.

Responding rapidly and beginning work at pace has helped reduce the negative impact of flooding on the area in the aftermath of the events. Being able to rapidly mobilise our staff and effectively embed them into the council’s team has enabled the mutual sharing of good practice and efficient delivery. Supporting the council through multiple major flood events has helped them rapidly assess damages and implement repairs, enabling communities across Rhondda Cynon Taf to recover more quickly in the aftermath of the flooding.
