The architecture and security features of this design-build competition-winning project maintain our team’s vision of a contemporary building fit for Redwood City’s civic center. The 37,000-square-foot building safely and securely houses the county’s mission-critical emergency operations. Located at the northern edge of historic Redwood City, it is a contemporary civic addition to the county center that celebrates the critical and heroic function provided by the facility and its dispatchers. The Regional Operations Center (ROC) provides flexible, non-secure training spaces, welcomes visitors from the community during public events, and functions efficiently with great resiliency during emergency situations.
The ROC establishes an inspiring new type of architecture for San Mateo County. The exterior expression reflects the clear and thoughtful arrangement of primary interior functions which simultaneously respond to the existing site conditions. The careful composition of elements, material palate, and overall massing provides a forward-looking, welcoming, and contemporary design to make the citizens of San Mateo County proud for generations to come. The design for the ROC facility reflects careful research and an understanding of the site’s history and surrounding context, bridging document findings, county and city planning documents, and urban design plans.
