Golspie Flood Study

Scotland, UK

Golspie and the surrounding areas are frequently affected by coastal flooding from the North Sea, causing damage to trunk roads, homes and businesses and recreational areas. Working with The Highland Council, we assessed coastal flood risk to the area and identified ways to reduce it.

By undertaking detailed computer modelling of the coastal environment, we were able to understand the sources, mechanisms and magnitude of flooding. It was found that large waves were the primary cause of flooding and that predicted sea level rise will exacerbate the existing flooding risk.

Understanding the flood conditions allowed us to compile and score suitable flood reduction options for Golspie. We developed and appraised these through multi-criteria evaluation, concept design, and consultation.

The preferred option involves raising the existing sea wall and extending the length of defences either side, which provides significant benefit in terms of avoided damages. The scheme also provides social and environmental betterments by reducing road, business and amenity closures as well as reducing flood related community stress and anxiety. This option has been submitted to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, SEPA, for national prioritisation and consideration for Scottish Government funding.
