Hebble Brook Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) is part of the Calderdale Programme of works which is within the Calderdale Flood Action Plan. The Calderdale Flood Action Plan, a joint initiative by the EA & Calderdale Flood Partnership sets out a detailed action to help Calderdale improve resilience, reduce risk of flooding and complete recovery work for previous floods.
Project context
The project is to reduce the risk of blockage of a river channel and a trash screen at the head of a large culvert. The area is surrounded with a steep embankment which consists of a historic landfill. There is a large risk of the landfill collapsing into the channel due to the stability protection being beyond its asset life which would create a large volume of water to back up the river and flood properties. The detailed design option is a realignment of the watercourse to improve the fluvial approach to the culvert. This will also help reduce erosion; potential collapse of stability protection at the toe of the landfill and provide much improved access for maintenance teams to safely clean the screen if it becomes blocked with debris in high flows. The project will look to provide long-term social and environmental benefits for the area by providing a woodland park for local residents, a much-improved river channel for WFD and provide new habitats for wildlife.
Collaborative working with the designers and contractors will achieve the flood risk and blockage reduction required whilst also providing the highest possible biodiversity net gain and minimal carbon output. Close working with Calderdale Council, Yorkshire Water (YW), Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT), local residents and councillors will provide a solution which all can benefit.
