The Howden Bridge Weir, which spans the entire width of the River Almond, massively impacts salmonid and other species. We designed a plan for West Lothian Council to restore the natural river connectivity and ease fish migration.
Initially we reviewed previous feasibility and optioneering studies, surveyed the site and liaised with project partners and the client to gain a better understanding of the geomorphology, hydrology, and ecology of the site.
Following confirmation of designing a rock ramp fish pass, we provided hydraulic and flood risk modelling to confirm the design would enable fish passage without any adverse effects such as an increase in flood risk. At almost 100m long, the scheme is the largest in the UK.
Since the ramp’s construction, the project was highly commended at the 2019 RSPB Scotland Nature Awards and at the 2020 CIEEM Awards.
