For a period of over 15 years’ AECOM has been responsible for Scottish Water’s major reservoir compliance with the Reservoirs Act 1975, and subsequent Reservoir (Scotland) Act 2011, delivering asset management services for 280 major reservoirs, including remedial works to over 100 reservoirs.
Scottish Water owns 256 impounding reservoirs, four non-impounding reservoirs and 20 service reservoirs, with most falling within the ambit of the Reservoir Acts for this period.
As part of the reservoirs inspections framework, we’ve worked with Scottish Water to ensure compliance with this legislation, making sure these critical assets remain safe. We’ve undertaken supervision of 280 reservoirs under Section 12 of the 1975 Act and Section 50 of the 2011 Act, as well as the inspection, reporting and certification of numerous reservoirs under Section ten of the 1975 Act and Section 47 of the 2011 Act. We’ve also carried out geotechnical investigations, hydrology, flood studies, spillway hydraulics and seismic studies.
Remedial works to over 100 reservoirs have also been completed to comply with the ‘works in the interest of safety’ as recommended in our Section ten reports under the Reservoirs Act 1975 and subsequent ‘listed measures other than maintenance’ in our Section 47 reports under the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011. This has included major civil engineering works, such as augmentation of drawdown capacity, increasing overflow capacity for save passage of floods, sealing of leakage, bridge and tower remedials, drainage and monitoring improvement works where we have taken these from investigation and design stage to certification of the completed works.
