AECOM delivered detailed fish passage designs at two weirs along the River Dee.
AECOM took proactive steps to address the impact of two weirs along the River Dee, recognising their potential harm to fish populations due to lack of fish passage design. By delivering tailored fish passage solutions at Horseshoe Falls Weir and Erbistock Weir, AECOM aimed to safeguard fish migration routes and preserve riverine ecosystems. The project employed comprehensive surveys, advanced modelling techniques, and active stakeholder involvement to ensure the effectiveness and feasibility of the designs.
Partial weir removal
The Erbistock Weir posed unique challenges stemming from partial failure, requiring careful consideration of both engineering requirements and landowner interests. AECOM's solution involved removing the central portion of the weir while maintaining visual coherence through bank retention. This approach, backed by extensive surveys and meticulous planning, addressed concerns related to sediment entrainment and morphological shifts, fostering collaboration and understanding among stakeholders.
Preserving heritage
As Horseshoe Falls Weir is steeped in historical significance, modification wasn't viable. Our specialised team designed a fish passage solution that aligned with surrounding beauty without compromising its heritage value. Through a methodical approach, we developed a partially culverted diversion channel, minimising visual impact while ensuring access for landowners. Integration of features like a fish counter and soil redistribution plan further enhanced the project's value and resilience against flood risks.
Sustainable solutions
AECOM’s detailed designs offer sustainable and effective fish passage solutions tailored to the specific challenges of each weir, while also considering landowner interests and heritage preservation. By facilitating fish migration and contributing to biodiversity conservation, these designs promote healthy river ecology. Additionally, they optimise sediment transport and mitigate flood risks, ensuring long-term resilience and environmental sustainability.
The final detailed designs met all project objectives and stakeholder requirements, showcasing AECOM's expertise in navigating complex environmental challenges. Our multidisciplinary approach, combining engineering proficiency with comprehensive surveys and stakeholder engagement, ensures that each project receives tailored and sustainable solutions. Whether it's restoring a historically significant weir or addressing structural issues, AECOM prioritises environmental conservation, stakeholder collaboration, and innovative design to achieve successful outcomes.
