As one of the strongest bonds in chemistry, PFAS are not only unique in their ability to suppress fires but also how they are able to leach through soils and into the environment. Existing research on the behaviour of PFAS in soil has highlighted that more investigation is needed to understand PFAS mobility through soil and the downstream effects of this journey to the environment.

Challenges

Remediation options for PFAS in soil are currently limited. Some technologies such as soil stabilisation and thermal treatment have shown some positive results, but there are questions around their efficiencies. Options such as onsite containment and capping are increasingly being considered as an interim measure, or potentially as a longer term option.

Solutions

AECOM has significant global experience in evaluating, selecting, designing and implementing a range of remediation technologies for PFAS impacted soil. We are looking to newer, innovative ways to manage wastes with the goal of destroying PFAS molecules, focusing on sustainable and affordable technologies, including electrochemical oxidation, ultrasonic or enzymatic oxidative destruction.
