Some PFAS are highly soluble, mobile and bio accumulative, meaning they can travel long distances through water. Long-term use of PFAS chemicals have resulted in contamination of the environment, including crops and water sources, around areas where PFAS was used. Uncertainty, globally, is resulting in a higher level of environmental regulatory scrutiny, which is expected to continue over the next decade. Its persistence in humans and animals has caused worldwide concern.

Challenges

PFAS in the environment pose unique challenges when assessing contaminated groundwater, surface water and wastewater. Advances in technology that remove and destroy PFAS in groundwater, drinking water and landfill leachate are critical to PFAS management.

Solutions

For over 10 years, AECOM has designed, installed, operated, monitored and maintained full-scale PFAS groundwater remediation systems and hundreds of residential and commercial supply well PFAS treatment systems.
