Aqueous Film Forming Foam Disposal and Alternatives Analysis
Across US and Canada
Confidential Oil and Gas Client
AECOM helped the client establish best management practices to address Aqueous Film Forming Foam stored in 20 locations and to recommend environmentally-friendly alternatives.
Our experienced hazardous waste professionals provided an assessment of disposal options and costs for PFAS-containing foam waste streams. This included both foam concentrate and dilute waste streams such as foam system cleaning rinse-water. The assessment considered incineration, landfills, and on-site/off-site treatment systems. The cost estimate for the recommended approach included a discussion of cost risk and cost-saving measures.
Our team also identified and recommended Class B firefighting foams that are effective, compatible with existing equipment, and of minimal risk to the environment. This assessment included a comparison of fluorine-free foams and fluorinated foams containing short-chain PFAS compounds (C6 foams). To provide an assessment most beneficial for our client, AECOM focused on the foam properties relevant to their facilities. For example, the foam properties most beneficial for an aircraft fire are different than a tank fire.
Our team prepared a method statement for foam fire suppression system cleaning and flushing prior to new foam addition. AECOM also prepared a standard operating procedure for control and containment of foam releases, which included potential release scenarios, planning and mitigation, initial response activities, containment and cleanup, treatment/disposal, and documentation.
