ScopeX™: validating and evidencing our decarbonization approach globally
We are dedicated to achieving net zero and significant decarbonization across both our organization and our work for our clients.
Validating our ScopeX decarbonization ambition
We are committed to significant decarbonization across both our own organization and the work we do for our clients. We are walking the walk and will continue to do so to lead by example.
SBTI-validated science-based net zero targets
In 2020, we committed to science-based targets well below 2°C. Since then, our science-based net zero targets are among the first globally to be validated by the SBTi and aligned with 1.5°C.
At the time of approval, we were the first and only U.S.-based company in the engineering and construction sector to have set approved targets. Designed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, these targets include a 20 percent reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 10 percent reduction in supply chain emissions by 2025 from our 2018 baseline.
2022 Terra Carta Seal recipient
We were one of 19 companies to have been awarded the 2022 Terra Carta Seal by the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) for our commitment to sustainability and exemplifying leadership in advancing environmental stewardship industrywide.
The Terra Carta Seal is only awarded to firms driving innovation and leadership within their industry and with a credible transition roadmap underpinned by globally recognized scientific metrics for achieving net-zero by 2050 or sooner.
The SMI definition of net zero is in line with that outlined in the SBTi Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, meaning achieving a state in which the activities within our value-chain result in no net impact on the climate from greenhouse gas emissions.
2022 CDP Supplier Engagement Leader
Working with our supply chain to reduce our emissions is a key priority. Our net zero team is working tirelessly to do this and we were delighted to be among the top 8% assessed for supplier engagement on climate change based on our 2022 CDP disclosure.
Tackling Scope 3 emissions is a challenge, particularly for a company of our size, as we have tens of thousands of suppliers from almost every sector imaginable. Fortunately, we have some of the brightest minds in the industry and will continue to engage our clients, suppliers and partners to set new standards to eliminate emissions across our supply chain.

Putting our ScopeX approach into action
We are aligning with industry-validated best practices outlined in the recently updated PAS 2080 standard to support the management of carbon in buildings and infrastructure development projects we are engaged with. Why? Because our biggest contribution to helping solve the climate crisis is through the work we do for our clients.
Repetition offers us a great opportunity to increase the impact of our ScopeX approach. We’re looking at our projects in a different way – making decarbonization standard practice in all our design, engineering, project and cost management commissions, not just when we have a sustainability or specific decarbonization role.
By focusing on decarbonization outcomes from the outset, we can be agile in our process, using whichever ScopeX methods and technology enablers we need to achieve the lowest embodied and operational emissions possible.
