A sustainable and circular future

Enhancing infrastructure sustainability in South Australia

South Australia is a global leader in renewable energy infrastructure and continues to grow its energy network and capability. Infrastructure South Australia (ISA) engaged AECOM to understand how grid-scale renewable energy infrastructure could be managed at the end of life as part of informing its next 20-Year State Infrastructure Strategy. The review thoroughly assessed circular potential, existing capabilities, and policy utilisation for driving meaningful change.

Understanding the physical materials

AECOM undertook a study to understand the physical materiality of the infrastructure, typical recovery practices, and local, national and international policy. This study included an overview of common infrastructure components, a forecast estimate of the available tonnage of materials recoverable from infrastructure, and an assessment of existing, scalable recovery and recycling technologies. Our analysis identified 18 promising opportunities, each with their intended benefits, enablers, and anticipated challenges.

Global examples for local adoption

We also identified policy mechanisms and interventions, considering international examples that South Australia could adopt to enhance the circularity of its infrastructure. Our analysis considered the commercial feasibility of circular practices and policy interventions, including mandates for circular strategies in applications, requirements for reusing and recycling content, and the establishment of product stewardship schemes.

Into the future

Our desktop analysis uncovered opportunities and suggested actions for ISA to guide South Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure towards a more sustainable and circular future. Informing the 20-Year State Infrastructure Strategy, the study provides invaluable support for in-depth investigations in the years ahead as South Australia powers forward through the energy transition.
