Creating Livable Asian Cities
To help Asian cities cope with the pressure of growing urban populations combined with climate risks and urban infrastructure deficits, The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has published ‘Creating Livable Asian Cities,’ to which we contributed.
Growing urban populations combined with climate risks and urban infrastructure deficits is putting pressure on the resources of many Asian cities. The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) book, ‘Creating Livable Asian Cities,’ which we contributed, addresses these challenges.
Setting priorities
Liveable and resilient cities are necessary for a sustainable urban future in Asia. The book focuses on five priority areas: smart and inclusive planning; sustainable energy; sustainable transport; innovative finance and resilience and rejuvenation. It explores how fast-growing cities in Asia can achieve their economic potential and create a liveable and resilient environment.
Our contribution covered the challenges around financial management and investment in Asian cities, presenting solutions that focus on maximising revenues and using additional income sources at a local level. Working with experts from ADB’s urban sector group, we developed a range of visualisations to communicate the findings in a user-friendly format and presented these via a webinar to government officials and urban practitioners across Asia.
Resilient pathways for urban development
We supported the ADB with three additional knowledge publications. This includes technical editing and review of the ‘Fostering Growth and Inclusion in Asian Cities’ chapter for ADB’s bi-annual flagship report ‘Asian Development Outlook’, as well as its guidance note on ‘COVID-19 and Livable Cities in Asia and the Pacific’.
We also co-authored the publication ‘Creating Livable Cities – Regional Perspectives’, which brings together urbanisation challenges and opportunities from Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia, by four regional development banks.
These high-profile publications unwrap complex issues facing cities today and provide the latest insights into more sustainable and resilient pathways for urban development in Asia and beyond. Improving quality of life while proving social and economic opportunities in Asia’s fast-growing cities is instrumental in fulfilling their potential as engines of economic prosperity and hubs for sustainability.
